From the research project "Mauri Ora - Nine Emergent Ecologies Taxonomy", the research team aimed to enhance the understanding of the climate, ecologies, urban wellbeing, socio-cultural issues, as well as gain knowledge on indigenous aesthetics and design conventions. The outcomes of this data visualisation project are a set of nine icons representing nine emergent ecologies, and a background grid with data indicators for a doughnut chart. Nine ecologies are:

  • Energy
  • Building
  • Mobility
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Economies
  • Civic, community, whanau
  • Educational
  • Iwi/Hapu

The research areas involve ideas of taxonomy and symbolism, weaving patterns of various cultures, floras and faunas, New Zealand's geographical locations, urban typography, urban artists, Pacific patterns and more. Research methods include books about traditional ornaments, architectures and weaving techniques; visual research from the exhibition Toi Tu Toi Ora: Contemporary Maori Art; and online resources about Tukutuku patterns, animal metaphors, artists and typography. Hand-done printing technique is a part of the production phase.
